Review of the ISO/DIS 9000-2000 Quality Standards

This review of the restructured and revised ISO 9000 series of quality standards serves to highlight the provisions for CM and/or the degree to which any CMII principles have been incorporated.

Per ISO/DIS 9000

This international standard encourages the adoption of the process approach to manage an organization. (ISO/DIS 9000 - para 3.4)

Documentation enables communication of intent and consistency of action. (ISO/DIS 9000 - para 3.7.1)

A permanent objective of the organization is continual improvement. (ISO/DIS 9000 - para 0.2 f)



Per ISO/DIS 9004

ISO 9001 may be used by an organization to demonstrate its capability to meet customer requirements. ISO 9004 is recommended as a guide for organizations who wish to move beyond the minimum requirements of ISO 9001 in pursuit of increased performance improvement. ISO 9004 is not intended as guidance for compliance with ISO 9001. (ISO/DIS 9004 - para 3.4)

Quality management system documentation shall depend upon (a) the size and shape of the organization, complexity of the processes and (c) competence of personnel. (ISO/DIS 9004 - para 4.2)

Each clause in this standard is based on eight quality management principles; (a) customer focus, (b) leadership, (c) involvement of people, (d) process approach, (e) system approach to management, (f) continual improvement, (g) factual approach to decision making and (h) mutually beneficial supplier relationships. (ISO/DIS 9004 - para 4.3)

The organization should provide an infrastructure that meets organizational needs in terms of hardware, software, tools, support services, communication and facilities. (ISO/DIS 9004 - para 6.3)

ISO 9004 is identical to ISO 9001 with regard to control of changes. (ISO/DIS 9004 - para 7.3.7)

To manage information effectively, an organization should identify its sources, provide timely access, use it to meet objectives and ensure appropriate security and confidentiality. (ISO/DIS 9004 - para 6.5)

Two fundamental approaches for improvement activity; (a) strategic breakthrough projects and (b) small step continual improvements made by work teams with existing processes. (ISO/DIS 9004 - Annex B)
